If there is a broken pipe or a zone that will not turn off, there is a way
to turn off only the water to the sprinkler in most cases. Below are the
steps necessary to turn the water off.
1. Locate the water meter. In most cases your water meter is under a
round copper lid located in the front yard. There are some notable
exceptions where the water meter is located in the back including Highland
Park, University Park and Castle Hills.
2. Locate the shut off for the sprinkler system. It is
generally located in a 1' x 2' rectangular green box but may also be in a
concrete box. These boxes are usually located within 2 feet of the water
meter and just slightly off to one the side. The box may also be located
on the other side of the side walk towards the house and in rare
occasions, within a few feet of the house generally by the water faucet.
If you can not locate it, this could be due to the grass growing over the
cover or it has been landscaped over. To resolve this, take a long screw
driver and poke into the dirt by the water meter to find it.
3. Remove the lid and turn off the handles shown in
pictures below. If you have an older style turn off with a water faucet
style round handle, do not over tighten. Due
to the design of these older style valves combined with their age, they
could stick in the closed position adding over a thousand dollars to your
repair. It is better to let a little water to leak out than over over
tighten the valve. If the handles are rusted off, vice-grip pliers are
very helpful.
4. Turn off the water. IF you are unable to get the
water turned off, Call (972) 247-9100 or (972) 898-8999 to try to get
a hold of Irrigation Pros. We generally do answer the phone after hours to
help our customers. If we are unavailable, turn off the water meter if you
have a key or call your local municipality.

*** Important to note that you may be eligible for high water bill
relief due to a sprinkler or plumbing problem. Many cities will look
at your historical usage and give you relief on a bill if you had repairs
done and invoiced by a licensed irrigator or plumber. |
